A HEALTHIER YARD, A HEALTHIER YOU: Treat Your Yard Organically
Every new year we promise ourselves to live a healthier lifestyle. While we improve our food choices and exercise daily, we often overlook the importance of our outdoor living space. Do you know that when we have a healthy earth, we will have a healthier human? Think about it! Our environment is not restricted to just our indoor living area. If it is important to eliminate toxic materials from our indoor space, it is extremely important to eliminate them from the outdoors. This can be achieved by treating our properties organically.
Some of the benefits of having an organic landscape are:
- Our drinking/groundwater (aquifers) will not be laden with harmful chemicals.
- Our skin and respiratory system will not be exposed to the harsh effects of artificial fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides.
- We can grow our fruits, vegetables, and herbs 100% organically.
- By personally tending our edible garden, we expose ourselves to sunlight which will increase the production of vitamin D and serotonin. This hormone helps regulate our moods (especially associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder), emotions, appetite, and digestive system.
Additionally, having a non-toxic yard means that:
- We have a safe space to play for our children, grandchildren, our neighbors, and pets (our dogs and cats occasionally eat grass and other herbs).
- We provide a healthy sanctuary for our wildlife inhabitants such as all pollinators (butterflies, bees, etc), hundreds or thousands of species of birds, lizards, frogs, and so on.
So how do we know if we have a healthy yard? Below is a short checklist to help us assess the health of our yard:
- You or your lawn care professional use artificial fertilizers to encourage the growth of your plants and grass.
- To manage weeds and non-beneficial fungi, you use synthetic herbicides and/or fungicides.
- Does your property lack native plants?
- Are your trees and shrubs care conventional?
- To control ticks and fleas as well as the mosquito population, you use chemical-based sprays.
If you answer YES to any of the above checklists, then you may want to change your ways to manage your environment. We, at The Natural Way Organic Landscaping, will be happy to help you transform your outdoor living areas into a naturally treated paradise. We have assisted many customers in Long Island, NY to transition from chemical-based lawn care to organic lawn care since 1990.
